On Monday, the Central Government notified the elevation of four practising advocates as judges across the Patna, Allahabad, and Uttarakhand High Courts, reinforcing the higher judiciary with new appointments at a time when court vacancies continue to draw concern.
The appointments, formally issued by the Union Law Ministry, mark the transition of experienced members of the Bar to the Bench. Advocate Ritesh Kumar and Advocate Praveen Kumar have been elevated as judges of the Patna High Court, while Advocate Jai Krishna Upadhyay has been appointed to the Allahabad High Court. Advocate Siddhartha Shah has been named as an additional judge of the Uttarakhand High Court. The notification was made public by Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal through an official announcement, bringing the long-pending elevations to fruition.
The appointments were effected through a Presidential notification under the Constitution, formally stating that the named advocates are “appointed as judges” of their respective High Courts. With this notification, the appointees are authorised to assume office and discharge judicial functions in accordance with constitutional mandate, including, in the case of Uttarakhand, Shah’s tenure as an additional judge.
