Today, in a startling security breach at the Supreme Court, a lawyer attempted to attack Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during a routine mentioning of cases. The incident occurred when the lawyer approached the Bench, attempting to remove his shoe and throw it at the CJI.
Security personnel intervened promptly, preventing any harm, and escorted the lawyer out of the courtroom. While being removed, the lawyer was reportedly heard saying, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge.”
Addressing the courtroom immediately after the incident, CJI Gavai instructed the Bar to proceed with their arguments and remained composed, stating, “Don't get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me.”
Sources indicate that the attack may have been triggered by the Chief Justice’s earlier remarks in a case concerning the restoration of a seven-foot beheaded idol of Lord Vishnu at Khajuraho. While dismissing the case, CJI Gavai had observed, “Go and ask the deity itself to do something now. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. So go and pray now. It’s an archaeological site and ASI needs to give permission etc."
The observation had sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with some claiming that it hurt religious sentiments. CJI Gavai later clarified in open court, “I respect all religions...This happened on social media.”
Representing the Central Government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta supported the CJI, noting the exaggerated nature of online reactions, stating “We have seen this...There is Newton's law which says every action has equal reaction, but now every action has disproportionate social media reaction, milord.”
The Apex Court continues its proceedings without interruption, highlighting the resilience of the Bench in the face of disruptive attempts and reaffirming the importance of courtroom decorum and security protocols.
