Jurist, scholar and legal author Abdul Ghafoor Noorani the esteemed constitutional expert and prolific writer, passed away at the age of 93 following a long illness due to a shoulder injury. Born on September 15, 1930, in Mumbai, Noorani was a distinguished legal scholar whose work spanned crucial issues such as fundamental rights, secularism and constitutional law.
Noorani’s career was marked by significant contributions, including his influential books The Kashmir Dispute and Constitutional Questions in India. He was known for his deep analysis of the Kashmir issue, the Emergency, and the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid Dispute. His scholarly work was pivotal in shaping discussions on Indian Constitutional and legal matters.
During the Emergency, Noorani faced arrest under preventive detention laws, an experience that further shaped his legal and political perspectives. Despite these challenges, he remained a prominent voice in legal scholarship and journalism.
Noorani’s legacy includes his impactful writings for various publications and his rigorous research into complex legal and historical subjects. His funeral was held at the Cutchi Memon Kabristan in Mumbai, attended by family and close friends.
