A First Information Report (FIR) was registered by Sharma’s father in February 2020, saying that his son had gone to buy groceries and general household items but he did not return back home after several hours, prompting him to lodge a missing report with the police.

Sharma’s father alleged that incidents of stone pelting, brick batting, arson, firing and sabotage had taken place by anti-CAA and pro-CAA protesters during demonstrations at Chand Bagh Pulia, Main Karawal Nagar Road and it went on for two to three days.

Sharma’s father further alleged that the locals in the area informed him that a man was thrown into the Khajuri Khas nala (drain) from the Chand Bagh Masjid after he was killed. The body of Sharma was later recovered from Khajuri Khas nala near Chand Bagh Pulia with sharp injuries on his various parts of his body and he was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Trial court framed charges against accused in March last year

The trial court had framed charges in the case in March last year against Shoaib Alam, Gulfam, Javed, Nazim and former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and others. The accused in Sharma’s murder case have been charged under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence), 302 (murder) read with 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
