An incident of discrimination against Hindus in the distribution of food amid shortage of supplies due to the coronavirus has been reported from Layari area of Pakistan's Karachi city.
However, the NGO, which refused to distribute food to poor Hindu families, has taken a corrective step and since then distributed 400 bags of food supplies among poor Hindu families in Karachi.
All Pakistan Hindu Panchayat (APHP) general secretary Ravi Dawani told TOI over the phone from Karachi on Monday that volunteers of Sayalani Welfare Trust had singled out Hindu women from the queue and told them that supplies were meant only for Muslims.
"When we came to know about the incident, I talked to the trust's founder, Maulana Bashir Ahmad Farooqui. He said there was no discrimination in distribution of free food supplies. The next day, the trust distributed 400 bags of food supplies among Hindu colonies of Karachi," Dawani said.
Edhi Foundation managing trustee Faisal Edhi refused to comment on the incident, but said they were not discriminating against anyone in distribution of supplies.
Dawani said non-profit organisation Fatimid Foundation, which offers blood transfusion services in Karachi, had asked APHP to set up blood donation camps for helping patients suffering from thalassaemia, haemophilia and other blood related disorders. He said they had already begun a drive.
"Due to coronavirus, almost all cities are under lockdown and Fatimid Foundation is unable to arrange blood for patients. If the situation continues for 10-15 days, the fate of patients will be uncertain," he said.
