Five policemen, including Beur police station SHO Pravesh Kumar Bharti, were arrested around Saturday midnight for allegedly taking Rs1.5 lakh as bribe from four criminals & setting them free. Bharti, sub-inspector Sunil Chaudhary, assistant sub-inspector Vinod Rai & home guard jawans Vinay Sharma & Krishna Murari Tiwari were sent to jail on Sunday.

The criminals had looted coins worth Rs18.4 lakh & a pickup van near Piplawa under the Naubatpur police station area Monday night. Four criminals involved in the incident were intercepted with part of the looted coins in a car near Beur main road. One of the four criminals had been released on Monday night itself & the rest three were set free on Tuesday last on the payment of altogether Rs1.5 lakh as bribe.

During the police investigation in the coin loot case, six criminals were arrested on July 19 & three more on Saturday morning. It were these three who told the police that they had paid Rs1.5 lakh to Beur police after their arrest by the patrolling team on suspicion while passing through the area in a car on Monday night.

The coins were being transported from Saguna Mor to Ranchi in a pickup van by one Radial Cash Management Services Private Limited when armed criminals on two cars looted it at Piplawa. Four persons, including firm’s employee Mahesh Prasad & van driver, were taken hostage & later set free at a secluded place.

Patna SSP Garima Malik said while six criminals involved in the loot were arrested on July 19, Laxmi Kumar Gupta (34), Sudhir Kumar (36) & Dilip Kumar (30) were arrested from near pillar number 58 of Raza Bazaar flyover on early Saturday morning. “They spilled the beans during interrogation. On their confessional statements, Bharti & his sub-ordinates were arrested late Saturday night,” she said, adding part of the looted coins & two vehicles used in the crime were recovered from the trio’s possession.

She said Sudhir, the pickup van driver, was also involved in the loot. “The role of a contractual driver of the police station & another home guard jawan is under investigation,” Malik said.

On July 19, Pintu Kumar (30) & Bittu Kumar (28) were arrested from Reva Sattar village under Maner police station area while Sujay Kumar (40), Ramdev Prasad (45) & Nand Kumar Singh (58) were nabbed from Ashirvad Vaishanvi apartment at Shahpur. One Subhash Paswan (35) was arrested from Rukanpura in Patna.
