The joy of a newlywed priest, 42, from Chamarajpet was shortlived after his wife left him for no reason within 3 months. He later came to know he was the 3rd husband she had dumped.
G Bhat, from Shivamogga, filed a complaint on Oct 10 for cheating & breach of trust against his wife & 3 brokers.
An officer said that “We arrested one broker last week, another secured advance bail, the third broker & his wife are on the run".
In all, he lost Rs 11 lakh.
Bhat said he was desperately looking for a life partner as he was into his 40s when he met a broker, Ganesh B, a resident of Hosanagar, Shivamogga district, a few months ago.
Bhat said that the broker told him that she was an orphan.
I asked Ganesh to find me a bride. Ganesh told me he was taking care of an orphan called Nayana Kumari alias Nayana, 27, & she had been brought up in his home. Ganesh assured me that he & 2 other marriage brokers, Srikanth Aithal & Achuth Hebbar, would arrange my marriage with her if I gave them Rs 3 lakh as a fee. I readily agreed,” Bhat said in his complaint.
The Priest paid Rs 3 lakh to the trio & married Nayana on July 8 at a temple near Kundapur, Udupi district. The newlyweds returned to Bengaluru within a week of marriage.
Bhat said, “My wife lived with me for a month & later started staying away from home for a few days. She left home on Oct 2 & never returned. She took away the jewels I bought her. I spent around Rs 8 lakh to buy her gold for the marriage".
According to police, Bhat later heard from a relative that Nayana had already married 2 men & she was part of a gang led by Ganesh to lure Brahmin bridegrooms.
An investigating officer said, “We arrested Srikanth Ital, 40, from Shivamogga a week ago. He confessed that Nayana posed as an orphan & didn’t mention her previous marriages to cheat Bhat".
Police said main accused Ganesh is a regular offender & had arranged several alliances using married women. “He recently secured anticipatory bail in the case from a city civil & sessions court which directed him to appear before the investigation officer within 15 days. We’ll know more details about the scam soon,” a police officer said.
Ganesh reportedly argued through his Lawyer in court that Bhat had filed a false case against him to cover up domestic violence against his wife.
