July 23, 2019:

When Nandini and Arulraj hired Ambika a month ago through an online advertisement, little did they know what was in store.

Although the woman and her boyfriend were first-time offenders, police said it was better to run a background check of a new domestic help. Online portals seldom do a due diligence of the person who posts an ad as a domestic help.

Nor do they accept responsibilities if things go wrong. Police said residents should log into the CCTNS portal (see graphic) and do a background check themselves.

“It is difficult to monitor all the portals and hiring through them involves a risk,” said additional commissioner of police (North) R Dhinakaran. During police verification, a complete history of any individual is dug out.

“If somebody has a shady character, it reflects in the police report even if there is no case registered against the individual,” he said. Any individual can apply on the police website requesting details for verification along with a consent letter from the person to be verified. If verification is sought without consent, the application is rejected and the applicant is probed. On an average, 30 petitions are made every week.

Once accepted, police verify the identity of the person, his or her present address and involvement in any criminal case. District crime branch officers and city intelligence wing officials are put on the job and they will have to issue a report within 15 days. Another option is to approach licensed manpower agencies, say police.

“People from such agencies have a clean track record. But one must ask the agency about the types of checks and the screening process,” said a Police Officer.
