C N Rao, 50, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) resident production superintendent (General Manager (GM)-Production) at the Uranprocessing plant, helped avert a major disaster on Tuesday, but ended up paying with his life.

"On smelling gas, Rao went to find out more & tried to close the main gas pipeline valve & succeeded. But a blast & the fire followed while Rao & others were trying to find any other leaking spots," said an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) official who was present at the time of the mishap around 7.15am.

"Rao was a dedicated & sincere person. He took the risk of his life to save the lives of others. This proves his diligence to his profession," said Rao's colleague. Rao held a BE (Mechanical) degree & had joined Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in 1990. He lived in Kharghar with his wife & 2 sons. "He was transferred to the Uran plant around 2 years ago. Many in Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) remember him as a very helpful officer, besides being nice to everyone," said another Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) official.

His family is in shock. "His brother has been informed. The charred body is difficult to identify. Hence a Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) sample was taken. Besides, forensic laboratory tests will be conducted," said a close relative at the hospital.
