A member of a gang from Haryana involved in ATM card skimming was nabbed in Dabhoi town on Sunday.

Vinod Mehla & his unidentified accomplice were trying to clone the data from the ATM card of a law professor, but as she raised an alarm, locals gathered & managed to catch hold of Mehla.

Dr Krupa Jaiswal, professor of Godhra law college, had gone to an ATM of State Bank of India (SBI) to withdraw money at Veraniya Vaga in Dabhoi. When Jaiswal entered the booth, the ATM machine was displaying account balance of the person who had withdrawn money before her. She exited the transaction, but the machine took time to process & at the same time Mehla & his accomplice entered.

Mehla pressed a button of the machine & asked her to go ahead with her transaction.

Jaiswal inserted her card but the machine didn't display anything, so Mehla again pressed a button & the screen displayed Jaiswal’s account details. When Jaiswal was entering the amount to be withdrawn, Mehla snatched her card & swiped it against a skimmer instrument.

“As the instrument beeped, I snatched back my card & asked him why did he swiped it, but he showed me another card & said that he swiped his card. Because I was suspicious, I asked him to show the instrument but the duo ran out,” Jaiswal stated in her complaint.

She ran behind them & shouted for help, hearing which locals managed to catch hold of Mehla while his accomplice fled away. As the locals thrashed him, Mehla threw the skimmer away. He was later handed over to Dabhoi police station along with the skimmer.

“The accused is a member of a gang from Haryana. We are interrogating him to know about his other gang members & his criminal records,” said inspector J M Vaghela of Dabhoi police station.
