On Friday, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) slammed the authorities after pictures of a child lying exhausted on a suitcase went viral, observing that it was strange that the pain of the child & his family was felt by many en-route, “except local authorities.”

On Thursday & Friday, the visuals of a mother pulling a suitcase with her small child sleeping half hung on it while she was passing through Agra’s MG Road were shared widely on social media. The family was coming on foot all the way from Punjab.

On Friday, the rights body took cognizance & issued notices to chief secretaries of Punjab & Uttar Pradesh, & also to the District Magistrate of Agra, asking for detailed report within 4 weeks.

The NHRC also sought report on action taken against the responsible officers or officials & relief/assistance provided to the victim families.

The panel in a statement observed that it is aware of the unprecedented situation & that the Central Govt. & State Govts were working sincerely to address every issue coming up during the lockdown.

It said, “But it is strange that the pain of the child & the family could be seen & felt by many en-route, except local authorities".

Had the local authorities been vigilant, some relief could have immediately been provided to the aggrieved family & others facing similar hardships, the panel said.

According to the press statement “The incident amounts to violation of human rights and requires intervention by the NHRC".
