About the Institution

NUSRL, Ranchi, the 14th National Law University of India has been established by an Act of the Jharkhand State Legislature, prompted by the vision of the constitutional forefathers that the law, legal system and legal institutions have an overreaching role of human, social, political and economic development of the Nation.

The Centre for Legal Aid Programme is an integral centre of learning at the National University of Study and Research in Law. The Centre is known to have been championing the contemporary and globally relevant domain of legal aid and awareness.

About the Seminar

National Seminar on Mental Health and its Interface on Socio-economic and legal arenas at National University of Study and Research in law, Ranchi on 15th– 16th May 2020

The Mental Healthcare Act had been introduced in 2017 upon the ratification of the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2006, after incorporating the human rights aspect of persons suffering from mental disorders, which wasn’t recognized in the prior Act of 1987.

Despite the enforcement of such an Act, its implementation seems to be a practical impossibility, under the prevailing socio-economic conditions of the country. In this context, the Medico-legal seminar shall endeavour to assess the actual stance and challenges faced by the different stakeholders in the existing mental healthcare regime such as mandated counsellors, the caregivers, local public authorities, social workers in the field of mental health, health economists, legal professionals, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, academicians and so on.
