Post Topper's Scam, owing to Stringent steps were taken by Bihar, 65% Students Fail

Pass percentage in 2016 was 67.66% which came down to 35.25% in 2017.

A year after Class XII topper scam rocked State and prompted Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) to take strong measures against cheating during the exams, a mere 35.25% students passed their Class XII examination in 2017, with nearly two-thirds of 12.40 lakh students flunking.

Stringent steps were taken this year after the BSEB's Class XII results in 2016 were marred by the allegations of brazen favouritism to help undeserving students top the exam.

Scam came to light after a topper, Ruby Rai, of Vishun Roy Inter College in Vaishali gave absurd answers to the simple questions from her syllabus in the TV interviews.

FIR was later lodged and several BSEB functionaries, including then Chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh , were jailed, along with the certain college officials and the students. Results of "toppers" were also cancelled. While Ruby Rai is out on bail, Lalkeshwar and four others are still behind the bars.

BSEB Chairman Anand Kishor stated that pass percentage went down by staggering 32%, and despite the moderation, apparently because of introduction of the barcoding in the answer sheets and the strict invigilation.

Overall pass percentage of the boys was 55.53% against 44.47% of girls in science, commerce and the arts streams.
