Renowned constitutional expert KK Venugopal has agreed to continue as Attorney General for India for 1 more year, refusing the Govt’s offer of a full 3-year term after his first term ends on June 30.

KK Venugopal, who was appointed attorney general on June 30, 2017, during the Modi Govt’s first term, will turn 89 in 3 months & will become the oldest Senior Lawyer to hold the post. Renowned jurist MC Setalvad was India’s first Attorney General, & had the longest tenure from 1950 to 1963.

On June 6, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad wrote to Venugopal & said, “You will be completing your tenure as attorney general on June 30, 2020. I wish to place on record my appreciation for the distinction with which you have served this high constitutional office. The government is keen that you kindly consider continuing as the attorney general.”

In a reply, Mr Venugopal said, “I will be 89 years old in another three months. Given my age, I may not be in a position to serve as attorney general for India for another full term. I would, however, be happy to continue as attorney general for India for a period of one year from July 1, 2020.”
