Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta took oath as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court, formally assuming office at a ceremony where the oath was administered by Governor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Gurmit Singh, completing a leadership transition cleared by the Supreme Court Collegium and notified by the Centre.
Justice Gupta’s elevation follows his position as the senior-most judge of the High Court after the Chief Justice and comes in the wake of the retirement of Chief Justice Guhanathan Narendar. His name was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium in December 2025 and subsequently approved by the Central Government earlier this month.
With a legal career spanning decades, Justice Gupta brings to the office extensive experience in civil, rent control, and constitutional matters, having served on the bench of the Allahabad High Court before his appointment.
The oath ceremony formally marked Justice Gupta’s assumption of charge as the head of the constitutional court, with the operative declaration that he had “taken oath as Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court.” The Central Government’s notification dated January 8 gave effect to his appointment, installing him as the Chief Justice upon the vacancy created by the outgoing incumbent’s retirement.
