Two weeks after a journalist was killed in Kerala by a speeding car driven by IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman, the young bureaucrat's woman friend Wafa Firoz, who was a co-passenger & owner of the car, was served a divorce notice by her husband K. Firoz.
Wafa has been asked to respond to the notice within 45 days. A copy of the notice has also been sent to the president of the Jama'ath committee in Navayikkulam, Wafa's hometown.
In his notice, Firoz, an NRI businessman, alleged that Wafa had followed a lifestyle which was “against the Islamic faith” & that she had travelled frequently between Bahrain & Thiruvananthapuram & mingled with several of her male friends, disregarding his objections.
Firoz also alleged that Wafa had undergone an abortion after three months of pregnancy without his permission.
He said Wafa did not speak to him after the accident on Aug.3 & that she even refused to meet him after he reached Thiruvananthapuram on hearing the news.
K.M. Basheer, 35, a journalist with a Malayalam daily, was killed after being hit by the speeding car driven by Venkitaraman who was allegedly in an inebriated condition. The officer was arrested on the same day, but was granted bail by a city court.
The state govt. had suspended Venkitaraman, who was serving as the survey director & a SIT(Special Investigation Team) was also constituted to probe the case. On Monday, the driving licence of the IAS officer was suspended by the state Motor Vehicles Dept.
