Justice Arun Chandra Upadhyay passes away at the age of 69

On Tuesday, Ex-Judge of Gauhati High Court, Justice Arun Chandra Upadhyay passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati.

Justice Upadhyay breathed his last at around 3.30 am in the wee hours of Tuesday. 

He was 69 years old at the time of his demise.

He is survived by his wife & 2 daughters & host of relatives. 

Justice Upadhyay was the youngest grandson of freedom fighter & founder president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) & brother of Ex-Tezpur MP Swarup Upadhyay.

He joined the bar in 1976. Justice Upadhyay practiced mainly in the HC of Gauhati & the district courts in Kamrup.

Justice Upadhyay was holding the post of secretary, Judicial Department of the Assam Govt at the time of his appointment as additional judge of the Gauhati High Court in Dec 2008. 

In 2011, he was appointed permanent judge of Gauhati HC.

Mourning his death, Bharatiya Gorkha Yuva Parisangha (BhaGoYuP) president Nanda Kirati Dewan said, “Today we lost an elder who served judiciary & contributed to the community & society.” 

he added that “Its an irreparable loss to the legal & judicial fraternity of Assam. May the departed soul rest in peace".

He further said, “Justice Upadhyay was a fountain head of knowledge & always a source of inspiration for legal & judicial fratenity with in the community.”

He was a well wisher of Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh since its inception.

Assam state Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP) president Prakash Dahal & general secretary Bimal Pradhan in a joint statement condoled the death of Justice Upadhyay & said the ‘Gorkha community lost a flag bearer son of soil today’.

Bharatiya Gorkha Yuva Parisangh also mourned the sudden & untimely demise of Justice Upadhyay.

Late Justice Arun Chandra Upadhyay was born in the year 1951 at Mazgoan, Behali in Sonitpur district of Assam to Tanka Nath Upadhyay, eldest son of freedom fighter & founder president APCC, Chabilal Upadhyay.

He completed B.Sc from Darrang College, Tezpur & did his LLB from Guwahati.
