The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has registered an FIR against journalist Vinod Dua for allegedly circulating fake news regarding the Northeast Delhi riots through a YouTube video he uploaded on March 11.

The FIR was registered following a complaint by Delhi BJP spokesperson Naveen Kumar.

The FIR has been registered for allegedly publishing rumours under IPC 505 and printing or engraving substance containing defamatory matter under IPC 502, a police source said.

Citing the video, Kumar claimed that Dua had mentioned "facts" that never happened. He has also shared a copy of the video along with the complaint. Kumar alleged that Dua had stoked communal tension by urging people to step out in large numbers during the riots.

A Senior Police officer said that prima facie it was found that an FIR could be filed.

Dua told TOI that he was not officially informed about the FIR by police but had got to know about it from various WhatsApp forwards.

Delhi Police will issue a notice to the journalist to join the probe and reveal the source from which he received the information.
