Months after receiving clean chit from departmental enquiry, Head Constable of Delhi Police Salim P K has now filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking compensation for the uploading of the video to social media and the subsequent coverage which has “irreparably maligned his image in the eyes of the public”.

Then Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi had initiated departmental action against Salim, who hails from Kerala and was posted at the Police Lines in Outer district. But now Salim has also requested the Centre to help him.

Salim’s lawyer Wills Mathews told that Salim is in his native state of Kerala and on three months’ medical leave as he had apparently suffered a massive stroke three years ago. His medical condition is not stable and his wife is going through from some medical treatment.

“According to his medical reports, three years ago, a blockage in his brain caused a brain haemorrhage that left him with a paralysed left side, a contorted face, memory loss, body weakness, and difficulty communicating normally,” he said.

He claimed that 50-year-old Salim had a black-out, leading to dizziness that sent him crashing to the floor on the day on which the video was recorded on the train. The video went viral on August 25 and two days after it, Bassi had suspended him after terming the incident “an exception”.

The undated video, posted on Facebook by a user, showed Salim, struggling to hold on to a pole while swinging back and forth inside the Metro coach. The 36-second clip also showed the dishevelled policeman with his shirt untucked trying to find his way around the coach in drunken stupor. As the train braked to a halt at Azadpur station on the Yellow Line, the policeman lost his balance and fell. The video showed fellow passenger helping him get up. IE
