The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of two advocates, Preeta Aravindan Krishnamma and Liz Mathew Anthraper, as judges of the Kerala High Court, a move aimed at strengthening the Bench at a time when the court continues to function with notable vacancies.

The decision was taken during the Collegium’s meeting on April 14, with both names cleared for appointment from the Bar. Liz Mathew, a graduate of National Law School of India University, has an extensive practice before the Supreme Court and has previously worked under Justice Indu Malhotra and former Attorney General K.K. Venugopal. She qualified as an Advocate-on-Record in 2008, later establishing an independent practice, and served as Standing Counsel for the State of Kerala between 2011 and 2016. She was designated as a Senior Advocate in January 2024. The recommendation comes at a time when the Kerala High Court is operating with 38 judges against a sanctioned strength of 47, reflecting a continuing shortfall impacting judicial capacity.
