On Tuesday, the Delhi government has earmarked ₹230 crore in its latest budget to strengthen judicial infrastructure, proposing new court complexes and additional courtrooms across the capital. The move, announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, aims to improve accessibility and efficiency in the justice delivery system at a time when courts continue to face mounting caseloads.
The allocation focuses on expanding physical infrastructure in key judicial hubs, including Shastri Park, Karkardooma, Rohini, and Rouse Avenue, with plans to establish new courtrooms and complexes. A dedicated family court has also been proposed in Rohini. While capital expenditure on infrastructure sees a significant boost, the budget reflects a reduction in allocation for the Department of Law, Justice and Legislative Affairs compared to the previous year, indicating a shift in focus towards long-term capacity building rather than administrative spending.
The Government emphasised the need for a more accessible and efficient judicial system. It stated that the initiative is “towards delivering an efficient, competent, and accessible judiciary,” underlining infrastructure gaps as a key constraint in timely justice delivery. The budgetary proposal formalises the plan to expand court capacity in high-demand areas across Delhi.
