On 2nd June 2020, The Punjab and Haryana High Court in the case of Renu Devi and another v. State of Punjab & others bench comprising of Justice Hari Pal Verma imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000/- on the Petitioners for not wearing the masks, during the time of marriage ceremony, which is necessary for the view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The court while hearing criminal writ petition through video conferencing due to outbreak of COVID-19.
The criminal writ petition filed under Article 226 of the Constitution of India with Section 482 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. In the present case, the petitioner contends before the court that the petitioner is major and has solemnized their marriage in accordance with the law and contended that the respondent is not accepting their marriage and trying to separate them by illegal means.
Without going into the validity of the marriage, Court disposed of the petition by directing SSP, Gurdaspur to take appropriate measures and passed an order to ensure that no harm is caused to the life and liberty of the petitioners at the hands of private respondents.
Some photographs were attached to the petition which shows that the petitioner and other guests were not wearing, the court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000/- for not wearing the masks.
The Court further stated that the money will be used for making masks in the District of Hoshiarpur.
