Recently, the Supreme Court has developed new software to assist in the process of case listing and bench allocation. The initiative, undertaken during the tenure of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, seeks to enhance efficiency and transparency in the internal management of cases while supporting the Chief Justice’s role as the authority responsible for assigning matters to different benches.

Currently, the allocation of cases before various benches of the Apex Court is determined by the Chief Justice in the capacity of the “master of the roster.” The newly developed technological system is intended to support this process by improving how cases are listed and scheduled before the Court. The initiative emerged after an internal review of administrative practices reportedly highlighted structural concerns within the Court registry, including prolonged postings of officials in particular roles and the continued reliance on outdated administrative mechanisms for case management.

The introduction of the software is designed to strengthen institutional processes by bringing greater technological support to case administration. The initiative reflects a shift toward modernised judicial management aimed at ensuring more transparent and efficient functioning of the registry. As part of this effort, the system is expected to assist the listing process while preserving the Chief Justice’s authority as the “master of the roster.” The step, officials indicated, is intended to streamline administrative procedures and minimise the risk of irregularities in case management.

The Apex Court is adopting technology-driven systems to improve transparency, efficiency, and accountability in case listing and bench allocation.
