Serious Conversion, Trafficking Allegations, yet Continued Protection: SC seeks 'Detailed Scrutiny' in Ajai Lall Case

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court stepped in to take a closer look at criminal proceedings against Madhya Pradesh-based social worker Ajai Lall, agreeing to examine whether the case warrants quashing while continuing to shield him from coercive action. With allegations ranging from forced religious conversions to irregularities in adoption processes, the case now moves into a crucial stage, with the Court signalling that the issues involved require detailed scrutiny before any further action is allowed to proceed.

The case centres on criminal proceedings initiated against Ajai Lall, a social worker from Madhya Pradesh, facing allegations of forced religious conversions, child trafficking, and irregularities in adoption processes. During the hearing, the State asserted that there was a pattern of attempts to convert minor children, particularly through a hostel associated with the petitioner. It further alleged that adoption procedures were manipulated using false or misleading documentation, including instances where individuals purportedly concealed their identity to facilitate adoption. In response, the petitioner sought quashing of the proceedings, contending that the allegations lacked legal foundation and that the case merited judicial intervention.

The Court acknowledged the State’s submission that the investigation was ongoing but expressed reservations about its continuation in light of the earlier order staying the trial and restraining coercive steps. Noting that the issues raised required comprehensive consideration, the Bench granted leave and directed that the matter be taken up for a full hearing.

It also clarified that “the interim order… staying trial proceedings and restraining coercive action… will continue,” thereby extending protection to the petitioner until the matter is finally adjudicated.
