Today, the Supreme Court initiated the consultation process for the designation of Senior Advocates by publishing a list of 293 applicants and inviting comments from stakeholders. The Court has now moved the process to the next stage of evaluation before the proposals are placed before the Full Court, ensuring transparency and wider scrutiny in one of the most significant recognitions within the legal profession.
The process follows applications submitted in response to earlier notifications issued by the Committee for Designation of Senior Advocates (CDSA), inviting eligible advocates to seek designation as Senior Advocates. The list published by the Supreme Court includes Advocates-on-Record practicing before the Court as well as advocates from various parts of the country.
In accordance with the Apex Court’s Guidelines for Designation of Senior Advocates, 2026, stakeholders have been invited to submit their views regarding the professional credentials and suitability of the applicants.
The Committee clarified that the consultation stage is intended to gather informed views from the legal fraternity and other stakeholders before the matter reaches the Full Court for final consideration. According to the notice, “suggestions or views, along with verifiable material,” may be submitted to the CDSA Secretariat either physically or through email.
The Court further specified that all responses must reach the Secretariat by 4:30 PM on April 1, 2026, after which they will not be taken into account. These submissions will subsequently be placed before the Full Court when it deliberates on the proposed designations.
