April,9,2017:
Mob violence unleashed by the self-declared Cow Vigilante Groups in country has come under judicial scanner as Supreme Court asked Centre and six states to respond why such elements should not be banned for creating disharmony among communities and the castes.
Apex Court Bench comprising of Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice M M Shantanagoudhar directed Centre and States of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Jharkhand to re spond within three weeks on the PIL seeking a ban on the “Gau Rakshak Dals“ often lawless groups that have assaulted alleged cow smugglers.
Supreme Court's direction comes days after 55-year-old farmer Pehlu Khan died following an assault by the cow vigilantes in Alwar, Rajasthan.
Apex Court was hearing a PIL filed by the Congress Leader Tehseen Poonawalla seeking a ban on the such groups for “unleashing mob violence against the innocent people“.
