On Friday, functioning at the Karkardooma Court complex in Delhi was disrupted as lawyers abstained from work and restricted the entry of police officials, protesting alleged inaction in an assault and robbery case involving an advocate. The coordinated response from the Bar reflects a growing sense of concern over the manner in which such complaints are being handled, bringing renewed focus on issues of advocate safety and the adequacy of police response.

The protest stems from an incident in the Ghazipur area where an advocate was allegedly assaulted and robbed. Despite the registration of an FIR and the submission of crucial material, including photographs of the accused and details of the vehicle involved, the Bar Association has asserted that the investigation has seen little meaningful progress. According to the lawyers, the incident is not an isolated one. They referred to earlier cases, including a firing incident involving an advocate, where action against the accused was allegedly delayed or incomplete. Concerns were also raised regarding instances of alleged misconduct by police personnel in dealing with complaints filed by members of the Bar.

Following an emergency meeting, the Bar Association passed a resolution expressing strong dissatisfaction with what it described as continued inaction by the authorities. It emphasised that despite the availability of material evidence, no effective steps had been taken to proceed against those responsible. The Association noted that such repeated lapses erode confidence in law enforcement, stating that “despite filing an FIR and providing details of the accused, no substantial action has been taken.” In response, the lawyers resolved to suspend work and prevent police entry into the court premises as a mark of protest.
