Sardar Soran Singh, a leading Sikh and activist and a Member of the assembly of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, was shot dead by some unidentified attackers in northwest province of Pakistan on Friday, according to reports.
Singh, who was considered a special assistant on minorities to the provincial chief minister, was attacked outside his family home in Pir Baba area of Buner district, the media reports said.
"Sardar Soran Singh was shot in the head and eye," Pir Baba SHO Mir Ghazab has confirmed.
He was shifted to the nearest hospital immediately after the incident, where he succumbed to his wounds.
There was no group which claimed the responsibility for the attack.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is home to a sizeable number of Sikh population. Soran Singh was a member of Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaf, the party led by popular cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan.
Sikhs in Pakistan’s northwest province have been targeted in the past as well by the militant groups, including Taliban. It is reported that several Sikhs have been kidnapped for ransom.
Three years ago, another PTI party provincial lawmaker Fareed Khan was shot dead by some unknown gunmen in Hangu province.
Dr. Soran Singh was a popular pakistani sikh doctor, TV anchor, politician and Minister of Minorities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Before joining Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in the year 2011 he was a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Party of Pakistan for nine years. He was also member of Tehsil council of his area, Member of Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee and also Member of Evacuee Trust Property Board. Soran Singh also hosted a programme on TV by the name Za Hum Pakistani Yam for three and a half years with Khyber News.
Dr Suran Singh, had promised to work for religious freedom and harmony in his province.
Dr. Singh, aged 59, was a practitioner of alternative medicine. He belonged to Bacha Kalay, a village in Pir Baba, District Buner. The Sikhs living in the area were forced to migrate due to deteriorating security conditions in the area. Singh had also left his hometown along with his six family members during military operation in the valley lately.
“I will work hard for maintenance of religious harmony and peace tirelessly not just in my hometown but in the entire province,” Singh had told The Express Tribune lately. “My efforts will be channeled to achieve freedom to practice religion for all the religious minorities.”
Protection of minority’s lives and wealth in Pakistan are the constitutional and legal responsibility which is given to us by religion and state, he used to say.
