About Theme

“The theme of this webinar will be the evolution of taxpayer rights in India from a direct tax perspective. It is critical to have a historical context to comprehend the progression in terms of taxpayer rights in India. Undoubtedly, from the first income tax statute introduced in British India to the recent amendments in the Income Tax Act,1961, we have come a long way. Therefore, the importance and scope of taxpayer rights in post-independence India will be presented, with references to the colonial and post-colonial travails of the taxpayers.

A broad analysis will be presented of some major statutory provisions and related challenges to comprehend the jurisprudence of taxpayer rights in a developing economy like India. The role of different administrative committees, the courts of law and the contemporary mechanisms of taxpayer grievance redressal will be discussed.

About Speaker

Prof. Kinshuk Jha is Associate Professor and Assistant Director, Centre for Comparative and International Taxation and Centre for International Trade and Economic Laws at Jindal Global Law School. He attained his bachelor degrees in Business Administration and Law respectively, from Symbiosis Law School, Pune in 2009. He was awarded the Erasmus Mundus scholarship to pursue a LLM in European Law at University of Rouen, France and Hanover University, Germany. Returning to India in 2011, he started practicing in the domain of Commercial Laws, particularly Corporate Laws and International Taxation. Prior to joining Jindal Global Law School in 2013, he primarily practiced in matters relating to Transfer Pricing and Authority for Advance Ruling.”
