Today, the Delhi High Court agreed to urgently hear a plea raising alarm over alleged threats of violence in Uttam Nagar following a recent murder incident, with petitioners warning of escalating communal tensions ahead of Eid, prompting calls for immediate preventive action by the police.
The plea, filed by a civil rights body, highlights concerns over inflammatory messages and gatherings allegedly inciting violence in the area after the killing of a young man during Holi, which later took on a communal dimension. The petition asserts that despite approaching authorities, no effective steps were taken to curb threats circulating both offline and on social media. It seeks urgent judicial intervention to ensure law enforcement agencies act proactively to prevent any potential outbreak of violence during the upcoming festival, placing the spotlight on administrative preparedness and accountability in sensitive situations.
The Division Bench of Justice Devender K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia agreed to list the matter for immediate hearing, indicating that concerns relating to public order and communal harmony require prompt judicial attention. During the mention, the petitioner’s counsel flagged alarming statements allegedly being circulated, stating, “there are wide-ranging threats of violence on Eid… ‘khoon ki holi hum eid pe khelenge’.”
