On Monday, Justice Mohammad Rafiq took oath as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court.

He took oath as the 31st Chief Justice of Orissa High Court in the presence of Governor Ganeshi Lal at Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar.

The development comes after President Ram Nath Kovind had ordered the transfer of Justice Mohammad Rafiq, who was earlier serving as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium had made a recommendation in this regard on April 18.

Following the retirement of Justice Kalpesh Satyendra Jhaveri, the Orissa High Court was functioning under the aegis of Acting Chief Justice Sanju Panda since January 5, 2020.

Born in Sujangarh in Churu, he is a graduate in law from Rajasthan University.

Justice Rafiq started practising as an advocate at the Bar Council of Rajasthan in 1984.

He was appointed as Additional Advocate General for Rajasthan in January 1999 and elevated to the bench of the Rajasthan High Court in May 2006.

He was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court in November 2019.
