The Delhi High Court has directed the police and civil administration to ensure robust security arrangements in Uttam Nagar amid rising communal tensions following recent violence in the area. The Court emphasised that preventive measures must be strengthened immediately to ensure peaceful observance of the upcoming Eid celebrations, underlining the need to maintain public order and a sense of safety for all communities.

The directions came in the backdrop of heightened tensions in Uttam Nagar after a 26-year-old man was killed during an altercation linked to Holi-related incidents in JJ Colony. According to police accounts, the violence escalated after a minor neighbourhood dispute, eventually leading to a fatal assault involving sticks, bats, and stones.

The incident triggered widespread unrest and inflammatory messages circulating online, further aggravating communal sensitivities in the locality. Against this backdrop, the Court was called upon to ensure preventive administrative action ahead of Eid celebrations.

The Bench, led by Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya, directed authorities to take all necessary steps under law to prevent any escalation of tension and to ensure an atmosphere conducive to peaceful celebrations. The Court observed that arrangements must be such as to “instil a sense of safety and security to all,” and cautioned that officials must remain vigilant, noting that “whatever happens in Delhi has a ripple effect.”

It further instructed that no element should be allowed to create provocation or disturb communal harmony, with security measures continuing through the festive period.
