On Saturday, the Karnataka State Junior Advocate Association went to meet Chief Minister, Shri B.S. Yediyurappa with plea to pass an ordinance to amend Karnataka Advocates Wellfare Fund Act 1983 so as funds could be released for needy Advocates who are bearing the financial crisis due the Lockdown observed in wake of the novel Coronavirus.
The Advocates Association also asked for release of ₹25 crore to KSBC Covid-19 Advocates Relief Fund.
In the plea to CM, the Association highlighted the struggles of the Advocates who depends on daily imcome for their sustenance.
It was stated that the sudden closing of Courts and shut down of the overall economy has left them dry and they are on verge of financial crisis.
It was mentioned before the CM that the Karnataka State Bar Council was the first in country to extend helping hands to the Advocates in need.
It has been collecting funds under the KSBC Covid-19 Advocates Relief Fund through donations and large hearted Advocates with adequate means are donating their max but the same has been falling short when added collectively to meet up with the scare needs of all the Advocates facing crisis.
Concern was shown as the Bar Council is unable to release funds due the limitation of the Karnataka Advocates Wellfare Fund Act 1983.
Section-16 B of the Act doesn't allow for payment for situation like the one at hand and to people below 65 years and less than 20 years practice.
This ties the hands of KSBC to withdraw funds out for distribution to needy Advocates and therefore request to pass ordinance has been put forth.
The Association mentioned that they are expecting 25000+ applications and thus shortage of funds will arise. To cop the same they have asked for the release of ₹25 crore by the Government.
