June 21, 2019:
The committee carried out surprise raids on May 31, June 1 & June 19, seized the bags, & fined Rs 99 lakh as environment compensation damages, an official said.
According to an NGT direction as well as the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2018, manufacturing, trading & selling of plastic bags with a thickness less than 50 microns is a criminal offence. NGT in 2017 had banned the use of such plastic bags in the capital, citing they were not only consumed by stray cattle, but were clogging the city drains. A fine of Rs 5,000 was directed be levied as environmental compensation on any violator found consuming or selling such bags.
The DPCC official said the raids were conducted to check the implementation of the Plastic Rules during which, 17 shops & vendors were fined, & their entire stock seized. “There will be zero tolerance shown towards use of banned plastic bags. More raids will be carried out in the future,” a senior official said.
