On Friday, the Madhya Pradesh High Court imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on a lawyer for attending court proceedings via video conferencing while seated in a car.
A Division Bench comprising Justice Atul Sreedharan and Justice Anuradha Shukla observed that the provision of virtual hearings is intended to assist advocates who are genuinely unable to attend court in person. However, the lawyer’s decision to appear from a vehicle was deemed disrespectful and inappropriate.
"The facility of arguments through video conferencing is extended to support counsels who are unable to be physically present in Court. It is not intended to relax the decorum expected during court appearances to the extent that the dignity of the Court is compromised," the Bench stated.
Consequently, the Court levied a fine of ₹10,000 on the advocate for failing to maintain the decorum and respect due to the judicial institution. The amount is to be deposited with the High Court Legal Services Committee, the Court directed.
