Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi have taken their oath as Judges of the Supreme Court of India today, at 10:30 A.M. The ceremony exclusively live stream on our YouTube channel.
The Central Government had approved their elevation earlier, with Law Minister Arjun Meghwal announcing the appointments this afternoon on X. The Supreme Court, which has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges, will now function at full strength, filling two existing vacancies.
The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice BR Gavai along with Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, JK Maheshwari, and BV Nagarathna, recommended the elevations on August 25. Justice Nagarathna reportedly dissented on the proposal to elevate Justice Pancholi.
Justice Alok Aradhe began his judicial career as an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2009, became permanent in 2011, and subsequently served in Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Telangana, and Bombay High Courts in various capacities, including Acting Chief Justice and Chief Justice.
Justice Vipul M. Pancholi, originally from the Gujarat High Court, began practicing law in 1991, was elevated as an additional judge in 2014, and confirmed as permanent in 2016. He was transferred to the Patna High Court in 2023 amid controversy, praised for disposing over 35,000 matters, and is known for his judicial efficiency and acumen.
With their elevations, the Supreme Court is now at full complement, ensuring smoother functioning amid the rising judicial workload and continuing its critical role as the apex forum for justice in India.
