Justice Alok Kumar Verma of the Uttarakhand High Court has resigned from judicial office, with the Union Law Ministry notifying that his resignation took effect on April 30, 2026.
According to a notification issued by the Law Ministry on May 27, Justice Verma tendered his resignation under proviso (a) to clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution. Justice Verma was due to retire in August 2026. Having begun his judicial career in the Uttar Pradesh Judicial Service, he served in several districts before joining the Uttarakhand judicial establishment following the creation of the State.
Over the years, he held various judicial and administrative positions, including serving as District Judge in multiple districts and as Principal Secretary, Law-cum-Legal Remembrancer to the Government of Uttarakhand. He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court in 2019 and became a permanent judge in 2021.
The development stems from Justice Verma's decision to relinquish office before reaching the age of superannuation. The Law Ministry notification stated, "Justice Alok Kumar Verma has tendered his resignation from the office of Judge, Uttarakhand High Court, in pursuance of proviso (a) to clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution, with effect from 30.04.2026." The notification formally records the cessation of his tenure as a Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court with effect from the specified date.
