In a significant move, the Supreme Court has conferred the designation of Senior Advocate on seven former Chief Justices and Judges of various High Courts. The decision was taken in a Full Court meeting held on September 17, with the designation coming into effect the same day, as per an official notification issued by the Apex Court.

The judges who have received this recognition are:

  1. Justice Attau Rahman Masoodi, former Judge of the Allahabad High Court

  2. Justice Avinash Gharote, former Judge of the Bombay High Court

  3. Justice D. Krishna Kumar, former Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court

  4. Justice G. Ilangovan, former Judge of the Madras High Court

  5. Justice Jitendra Kumar Chauhan, former Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court

  6. Justice R. Subramanian, former Judge of the Madras High Court

  7. Justice Virendra Gyansingh Bisht, former Judge of the Bombay High Court

This is the second such exercise in recent months. Earlier in April, the Apex Court had similarly granted senior designation to six former High Court Judges who resumed legal practice after their retirement from the Bench.

The conferment of Senior Advocate status underscores the professional stature and continued contribution of former members of the higher judiciary to the legal profession.
