On Monday, the Apex Court sought response from the Centre on a batch of pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the newly enacted 3 contentious farm laws.

A bench headed by CJI S A Bobde issued notice to the Central Govt & sought its reply within 4 weeks.

The 3 laws -- Farmers' (Empowerment & Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance & Farm Services Act, 2020; Farmers' Produce Trade & Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) Act, 2020 & The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020 -- took effect from Sept 27 after President Ram Nath Kovind's assent.

The bench, also comprising Justice A S Bopanna & Justices V Ramasubramanian, was hearing petitions filed by Rashtriya Janta Dal lawmaker from Rajya Sabha, Manoj Jha; Congress Lok Sabha MP from Kerala, TN Prathapan & Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Rajya Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu, Tiruchi Siva, & a petition filed by Rakesh Vaishnav.

The pleas alleged that the 3 farm laws passed by Parliament would dismantle the Agricultural Produce Market Committees system intended to ensure fair prices for farm products.
