September 13, 2018:

Supreme Court has decided to monitor functioning of Courts specifically set up in States to 'fast-track' Criminal Cases against Legislators.

Apex Courts' three-Judge Bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi expounded that it would monitor compliance of Court Orders to make sure that all the 12 Special Courts function effectively.

Supreme Courts Bench' decision came after the Ministry of Law informed it that the Special Courts have been established in different states to try 'Lawmakers' on a priority basis.

SC Bench as a conclusion sought to know from State Chief Secretaries & High Court Registrars-General whether the Courts were enough or there is need to set up more.

Supreme Court Bench sought to know the detail of number of cases which have to be referred to Special Courts.

SC Bench has directed that information sought to be submitted by October 10.

Ministry of Law in an earlier Affidavit told Supreme Court that in States where the number of Criminal Cases against MPs and MLAs were less than 65, 'Regular Courts' will try to fast track them.

Eleven states have set up a total 12 Special Courts, two in Delhi and one each in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar West Bengal, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
