On Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu Government launched the Singappen Special Police Force dedicated to women's safety, placing the new unit under the direct supervision of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Beginning with 70 specialised units, the programme signals Tamil Nadu's effort to build a focused and technology-enabled policing framework dedicated to women's safety across the State.

According to the State Government, the first phase of the project will begin with 70 operational units comprising 140 Sub-Inspectors and 420 police constables across Tamil Nadu. The force will be headed by Inspector General of Police K. Bhavaneeswari. Officials stated that shortly after May 10, 2026, approvals were granted for the creation of 2,545 posts for the specialised unit. These include 49 Inspectors, 641 Sub-Inspectors, 1,843 Constables, ministerial staff, and technology-focused positions. The Government also announced that fresh recruitment would be undertaken and personnel would receive specialised training. In addition, a dedicated headquarters structure is being established to oversee the planned expansion to 270 field units across the State.

While announcing the initiative, the Government emphasised that the Singappen force has been created with the objective of enhancing women's safety and ensuring effective statewide coordination. The official release stated that the unit "will function under the Chief Minister’s direct supervision." To support field operations, the State has approved the procurement of 319 four-wheelers, 101 two-wheelers, body-worn cameras with live-streaming capabilities, drones, and other communication infrastructure. The Government has allocated ₹354 crore for the force's establishment and operations, while a further ₹2.15 crore has been sanctioned for headquarters staffing and administrative support.
