On Tuesday, the Supreme Court issued notice on the bail plea of festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, an accused in the case arising from the drowning death of Assam musician Zubeen Garg in Singapore. The matter will now be considered at the end of July after the State sought time to place its response before the Court.
The case concerns the death of Zubeen Garg on September 19, 2025, during a yacht outing in Singapore, where he had travelled in connection with the North East India Festival. Although the Singapore authorities recorded drowning as the cause of death, the incident led to controversy in Assam, multiple FIRs, an SIT investigation and arrests. Murder allegations were subsequently raised against several persons, including Mahanta. Seeking bail, Mahanta’s counsel submitted that there was no likelihood of him absconding, stating, “A person dies of drowning. No flight risk.”
The Vacation Bench of Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notice on Mahanta’s special leave petition after counsel for the State accepted notice and sought time to file its response.
The Court directed that the matter be listed at the end of July for further consideration.
