On Tuesday, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the elevation of 6 advocates as judges of the Karnataka High Court, a move that could significantly strengthen the Court's judicial capacity if approved by the Central Government. The recommendation comes at a time when the High Court continues to function below its sanctioned strength, making the proposed appointments important for reducing vacancies and improving judicial functioning.
The recommendation was approved during a meeting of the Supreme Court Collegium held on June 2, 2026. The 6 advocates proposed for elevation are Raghavendra Seetharam Srivatsa, Hema Kulkarni, Subramanya Rangarao, Thadagavadi Prakash Vivekananda, Bakkeswara Pramod, and Hombe Gowda Shanthi Bhushan. The proposal follows the recent appointment of three judicial officers as additional judges of the Karnataka High Court, which increased the Court's working strength to 48 judges against a sanctioned strength of 62. If the latest recommendations receive approval, the working strength of the High Court will rise further.
