For the past 6 days, the Advocate's chambers in Lucknow District Court are without power after the Court snapped all 'katia' connections to help Lucknow electricity supply administration (Lesa) in its drive against power-theft & recovery of dues.

Last week, a letter from central nazir of the District Judge's Court asked Lesa to provide a 5-hour shutdown on April 23 to clean the Court premises, including rooftops, of all the lawyer's chambers with the help of civic authority. During the drive, all the 'katias' used for power theft were also removed.

Lesa chief executive engineer Vipin Jain said, "The district court has 700kW power connection & a number of advocates had been illegally using 'katia' to light up their chambers. Recently, we received a letter from court to provide them a five-hour shutdown during which all the 'katia' cables from main overhead wires were removed".

Sub-divisional officer, Residency, Ashish Kumar said, "There are close to 1,000 chambers in the district court premises with over 10k advocates, but only a dozen have power connections & they too haven't paid bills. In fact, Central Bar Association (CBA) Kaiserbagh, Lucknow, hasn't paid over Rs 43.55 lakh dues since 2000. Their supply was disconnected in November 2020."

"We won't be able to pay Rs 43.55 lakh, therefore the district court should bail us out. Further, to curb power theft, we have asked LESA to provide us power infrastructure so that advocates get connections & pay their bills regularly," said CBA president Sunil Dwivedi.

"Our team spoke to CBA. Our focus is on curbing power theft, so we are ready to provide infrastructure, but we need assurance of no more theft & bill payment on time," said Jain.

Powercut for maintenance

Power supply will remain disrupted from 10.30am to 1:30pm in Vivekandpuri, Faizabad road, Ramkrishna Marg, Jamescourt Apartments, Nirala Nagar & other areas due to maintenance of power infrastructure.

Power theft in 23 houses

Officials detected power theft of upto 21 kw in 23 households falling under Rajendra Nagar sub division, which includes Punjabi Mohalla, Ganeshganj, Maqboolganj.
