A first year law student allegedly shot and killed his female classmate inside a private law college in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district on Monday, before attempting suicide, triggering urgent questions over campus security and student safety. The incident, which unfolded inside a classroom just before lectures began, has left one student dead and another critically injured, with police launching a multi-angle investigation.

The shooting took place at a private college in Usma village, Tarn Taran, where both the accused, a 20 year old male student, and the victim, a 19 year old woman, were enrolled in the first year of the LL.B programme. According to the police, CCTV footage captured the accused briefly speaking to the victim before allegedly firing at her at close range inside the classroom.

He then allegedly used the same firearm to shoot himself. The victim died on the spot, while the accused was rushed to hospital and remains under treatment.

Police officials stated that the sequence of events suggests the act was carried out moments before classes commenced, raising serious concerns about how a weapon was brought onto the campus. Investigators are examining possible personal links between the two students, including a suspected friendship angle, and have seized their mobile phones as part of the probe. Family members of the deceased have also questioned the apparent lack of security checks at the college premises.

Addressing the incident, a senior police officer confirmed, “The girl died on the spot after being shot. The accused then fired at himself and is currently undergoing treatment. The matter is being probed from all angles.” Authorities have assured that further legal action will follow based on the outcome of the investigation.

This case has reignited concerns over campus security protocols, highlighting the urgent need for stricter access controls and preventive safeguards in educational institutions.
