On Friday, the Supreme Court sought a report from the Karnataka High Court regarding objectionable comments made by Justice Vedavyassachar Srishananda during court proceedings involving a woman lawyer.
A five-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud, convened to address these controversial remarks. The bench included Justices Sanjiv Khanna, B.R. Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy, who collectively emphasized the need for clarity on the matter.
The Supreme Court directed the Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court to submit a report after consulting with the Chief Justice of the High Court, to be completed within two weeks. Additionally, the Court has called upon Attorney General R. Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta for their assistance in this issue.
During the proceedings, two videos featuring Justice Srishananda went viral on social media. In one clip, he referred to a Muslim-majority locality in West Bengaluru as "Pakistan." In another, he admonished a woman lawyer for her response to a question directed at opposing counsel, jesting that she seemed overly familiar with the opposite party's affairs.
The Supreme Court indicated that it may establish basic guidelines regarding such conduct in judicial proceedings.
