On Monday, the Centre appointed Justice Sanjeev Kumar as the Acting Chief Justice following the elevation of Chief Justice Arun Palli to the Supreme Court of India. The appointment ensures continuity in the functioning of the High Court until a regular Chief Justice is appointed, with the notification issued under Article 223 of the Constitution of India.

The development follows Justice Arun Palli's appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court, creating a vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court. To address the transition, the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, issued a notification authorising Justice Sanjeev Kumar, a sitting Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, to discharge the duties of the Chief Justice.

Justice Kumar, who enrolled as an advocate in 1989 after obtaining his law degree from the University of Jammu, has served on the High Court Bench since June 2017 and has dealt with matters relating to constitutional law, service disputes, preventive detention, land laws and public administration.
