In an act of immediate judicial intervention, the Chhattisgarh High Court took suo moto cognizance today of a shocking incident reported in the media, where a four-year-old LKG student was brutally subjected to corporal punishment. Acting on a news report titled "Child tied to rope, hung from tree over homework," the Court, which was not slated to hear the matter until January, immediately directed the Secretary of the Department of School Education to file a personal affidavit explaining the matter and the disciplinary action taken.
The controversy began when a horrifying video went viral on social media, capturing two female teachers from a private school in Chhattisgarh's Surajpur district tying a rope to a young LKG student's shirt and hanging him from a tree inside the school premises, all allegedly because the child failed to complete his homework. The incident was filmed by a youth on a nearby rooftop, who reported that the teachers attempted to stop him from recording the brutal act instead of releasing the child.
The viral outrage forced the Education Department to launch an inquiry. While the Additional Advocate General informed the Court that "action has been taken," the parents and locals continued to demand strict, decisive measures against the responsible teachers, identified as Kajal Sahu and Anuradha Dewangan.
The High Court viewed the newspaper report as sufficient evidence of a grave violation requiring immediate official response, overruling the initially scheduled hearing date. Recognizing the urgency of protecting the child and holding the officials accountable, the Court opted to seek a direct response from the highest administrative authority in the Education Department rather than relying solely on the preliminary reports. The order signals the Bench’s intent to maintain strict oversight on the departmental response to this horrific case of corporal punishment.
The Court directed, "In view of above, the Secretary, Department of School Education, Government of Chhattisgarh is directed to file his personal affidavit by the next date of hearing regarding the aforesaid issue."
Consequently, the Court listed the case for urgent hearing on December 9, 2025.
