Recently, the Court in Uttar Pradesh revisited a disturbing case that revealed how a minor quarrel between siblings over a mobile phone turned into a shocking act of violence. The incident, which took place five years ago, ended with the tragic death of a 16-year-old girl at the hands of her own brother, highlighting the devastating impact of uncontrolled anger within families.

The case arose when a teenage girl was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a village in Gonda district. A local resident lodged an FIR alleging that the girl’s father and brother had murdered her following a family dispute and buried her body near a riverbank. Acting on the district magistrate’s order, the authorities exhumed the body, and a post-mortem confirmed death caused by a severe head injury. Investigation later revealed that an argument between the siblings over a mobile phone had escalated, leading the brother to strike his sister on the head with a stick, causing her death.

The prosecution maintained that despite all key witnesses turning hostile due to family pressure, the circumstantial and medical evidence conclusively proved the accused’s guilt. The defence, however, sought leniency, arguing that there were no direct eyewitnesses and highlighting the close familial relationship between the accused and the deceased.

After carefully assessing the evidence, witness statements, and expert findings, the Court observed that the prosecution had proved its case “beyond reasonable doubt.” It noted that although family members retracted their statements, the consistent chain of circumstantial and documentary evidence was sufficient to establish guilt. The Court termed the act of killing one’s own sister over a trivial issue acrime of the rarest kind,” reflecting deep moral decay and a shocking disregard for human life.

In its decision, the Court convicted the accused and sentenced him to life imprisonment with hard labour along with a fine of Rs. 1 lakh, rejecting the plea for leniency and holding that such a heinous act warranted no sympathy.
