The Central government has cleared the appointment of four Chief Justices of High Courts and Senior Advocate V Mohana as judges of the Supreme Court, bringing the Apex Court close to its newly sanctioned strength. The appointments come shortly after the Court's sanctioned capacity was enhanced from 34 to 38 judges, taking the number of sitting judges to 37 and substantially strengthening the Supreme Court's adjudicatory strength.
The appointments were made on the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The five appointees are Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court; Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court; Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court; Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh; and Senior Advocate V Mohana. The selections bring together judges with experience across multiple High Courts and notable constitutional, administrative and public law matters, while Mohana’s elevation directly from the Bar adds a rare dimension to the appointments.
The government’s approval comes shortly after the Collegium recommended the elevations. Among the appointments, Mohana’s selection stands out as she becomes only the second woman to be elevated directly from the Bar to the Supreme Court. Her induction will also increase female representation on the Court. The other appointees have served as Chief Justices of major High Courts and have handled several significant legal disputes during their judicial careers.
